World Heart Day 2011

Today is World Heart Day

3 Launched back in 2000, World Heart Day was created to inform people around the globe about heart disease and stroke – diseases that claim 17.1 million lives each year.

The number 1 cause of death worldwide

Risk factors for heart disease and stroke include raised blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, as well as smoking, inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables, obesity and physical inactivity. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes 29 percent of all deaths globally each year, making it the world’s number one killer.

Avoiding the risks

But there is good news: 80 percent of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided if the main risk factors – tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity – were controlled.

Find out more about World Heart Day including practical tips on how to stay fit and healthy.
